Hanna high school is now home to the secondary teacher of the year.
“I make this classroom a community of learners,” says world geography teacher Scott Sherman. “We are in this together."
It’s that mindset that helped Sherman receive the Teacher of the Year Award from the Association of Texas Professional Educators this past July.
“It was almost surreal, like slow motion,” says Sherman. “I heard my name called and I looked at my wife and we just said oh my God.”
Sherman has been educating students for over twenty years and was one of three finalists for the award that recognizes teachers from across the state.
“I will work as hard as I can to make this class interesting,” says Sherman. “I try to see what I am like from their point of view.”
Sherman is extremely grateful for receiving the award, but the highlight of his summer will be next Monday when he gets to see his new students for the first time.
“I'm so excited about the first day of school,” says Sherman. “I love my job.”
He’s not only a great help for students, but administration as well.
“He's one of those teachers that kids want to have and will never forget,” says principal of Hanna H.S. Teri Alarcon. “From the moment that school starts he is ready for the students and the students are anxious to get into his classroom.”
Sherman says the most rewarding part of his job is seeing the light turn on in a student’s head once they understand his lesson. He says he wants to help his students in any way possible.
“Students know who is there for them and they know who is watching the clock,” says Sherman. “Students can read teachers like a book.”
If that’s true, then Sherman is a book they won’t want to put down.
