It's called the Guns and Hoses Blood Drive, a friendly competition between the Brownsville Fire Department and Police Department.
Friday it's was the Brownsville Police Department's turn to give blood.
Officer Manuel Montes is happy to roll up his sleeve.
"A lot of people are in need of blood and I am trying to help out the community for however needs blood."said Montes.

Brownsville PDS's IT manager Paul Cantu wanted to do his part.

"Just help the community, just in case people are in need of blood."said Cantu

Brownsville police is working with the United Blood Service.
The goal today is to collect 30 units. One unit is about 16 oz.

"With 1 unit of blood we can save the lives of 3 people or 12 little premature babies, less that two percent of the population actually donates blood, that's why we do these kind of events, and of course we have the best role models and the fire department and police."said United Blood Service’s Sadot Azzua.

Saturday from 12pm-6pm it will be the fire department's turn.

"I know last year we had the greatest turn out, if I remember it was between 65-70 pints that we had from 12pm-6pm, we are hoping to surpass that this year."

Each department wants to win, so that everybody wins.

All the blood donated will stay right here in the Rio Grande Valley.

The public is invited to join in the competition and donate blood. Saturday you can donate with the fire department at the Walmart on Alton Gloor from 12pm to 6pm.
