Graham Garfield, who opened fire on 3 Valley men Tuesday night, faced a judge for the second time this week. This time after one of his victims, Alex Estrada, died after being taken off life support last night.
Garfield is behind bars under a $2 million bond. He’s now charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder for the shootings.
The family hoped Estrada would pull through this one but after consulting with doctors, decided to take him off life support.
Although Garfield has not provided investigators with a written statement, he has told them he shot at the men because he thought they were stealing his palm trees.
Hidalgo County Sheriff, Lupe Treviño, tells us there were three previous police reports of theft at Southern Nurseries, which Garfield’s family owns. Since 2006, there have been 10 trees stolen.
He also stated that a person can use a weapon in self-defense if someone forces an entry in their property. But the law doesn't apply to Garfield since the three men were on a public roadway.
