Governor Perry signs bill requiring drug testing for unemployment benefits
AUSTIN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — If you want to collect unemployment benefits in Texas, stay away from drugs.
That's the message from Texas Governor Rick Perry who signed Senate Bill 21 on Friday, June 14th.
The bill requires drug testing for those individuals who are applying for certain jobless benefits as Governor Perry stated, "Our system isn't established to carry those who are unwilling to work. Our system is designed to provide assistance to people through a difficult period of their lives, not to subsidize those who misuse the assistance to abuse drugs."
Applicants who give "suspicious" answers on questionnaires may be forced to take drug tests, those who fail the test would lose their benefits.
