HARLINGEN, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The city of Harlingen now has a new place to take your furry friends.
The Bark Park is located on 4.5 acres of Victor Park just along the expressway. It was a joint operation of the City of Harlingen and the Rotary Club that really made this all happen. But it was one man's vision a year ago that made this come true today.
Tre Peacock, Rotary Club President, "We started thinking about what to do, and we started planning then. It took until April to get our funding all realized and we started immediately after that. Finally a year later, it came to fruition."
The Rotary Club contributed about $18,000 which paid for the fencing and the water fountain that can be used for humans and dogs. The rest of the funding came from the city and it all totaled over $40,000.
The park includes lots of different obstacles and activities for the dogs enjoyment and room to run. To the dogs, and their owners though, they've waited long enough.
Hilda Ball, dog owner, "This has been a long time waiting. Actually this is the most dogs I've seen in Harlingen. They kind of all just came out now, kind of been in hiding."
Many city officials and local groups came out today supporting the park. Some by giving out treats and drinks for both people and pets. And everyone was introduced to some of the rules of the park. And it's officially open for enjoyment.
Peacock, "Park is really for the citizens of Harlingen, and I hope that the citizens embrace that and come out and use it. It's for them."
