Former Senator, Presidential candidate and Nixon foe George McGovern has passed away at the age of 90.

Former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate George McGovern died early Sunday morning.

He was 90 years old

McGovern was the Democratic candidate for president in 1972.

He lost that election in a landslide to Richard Nixon, winning only one state.

In a rare development for a politician, McGovern's reputation actually grew in the decades that followed his presidential loss.

McGovern represented South Dakota for four years in the House and 18 years in the U.S. Senate.

Last week his family disclosed that he had entered hospice care.
