Tax season is here. The official last day to file isn't until April, but many taxpayers in the lower valley often rely on their tax refund money much sooner than spring, so they elect to file their taxes early.

United Way of Southern Cameron County and several partner organizations have officially opened their free tax prep services.

Individuals or families earning under $49-thousand dollars qualify for the free service.

There are five sites throughout Cameron County. Taxpayers can contact 2-1-1 to figure out which site is the best location to file their taxes.

"Some of our sites are walk in sites, which means you need to come in and sign a list, then you wait for your appointment. Other sites are by appointment." said Keren Arista, of the United Way of Southern Cameron County.

There are a few key pieces of documentation a taxpayer must provide to the tax expert when you arrive for your appointment; a photo ID, original social security cards, and all tax forms. Officials say last year’s tax return is also helpful.

"We just really want people to be able to keep all of their earned income credits in their pocket, and not have that out of pocket expense."

Taxes are prepared by volunteers trained by the IRS and the service is paid for through a grant.

The free tax prep service runs through April 15th. For more information contact 2-1-1.
