Former police officer, in Panama Unit case, pleads guilty

A former officer with the Mission Police Department has pleaded guilty in the Panama Unit investigation.

Alexis Espinoza, 30, a former traffic narcotics officer, pleaded guilty to conspiring to possess with intent to distribute more than over 5 pounds of cocaine and over 1 pound of methamphetamine.

Espinoza along with other police officers and deputies of the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office were accused of using their law enforcement authority to seize narcotics and then turn around and sell the drugs to local dealers.

A judge has set a sentencing date for September 10th and Espinoza faces a minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison along with a fine of up to $10 million dollars.
