HIDALGO CO.- A former Pharr police officer was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday morning, after he helped smugglers transport drugs and weapons.

According to United States Attorney, 34 year old Jaime Beas is accused of providing protection to a vehicle that he knew contained cocaine in exchange for money. Officials say Beas helped smuggle the weapons at least three times last year.

Beas was paid a total $12,000 to keep the trafficking sting under wraps. According to the indictment, Beas also exported assault rifles and body armor into Mexico.
