Former Panama Unit officer pleads guilty to conspiracy
HIDALGO COUNTY, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A former Hidalgo County deputy pleads guilty to conspiracy in his involvement with the disbanded Panama Unit.
Former Hidalgo County deputy Fabian Rodriguez, 28, of Edinburg pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to posses with the intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine and 500 grams of meth.
Rodriguez was a former member of the disbanded Panama Unit, a drug task force operated by the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office. He admitted to using his position in law enforcement to steal narcotics and sell the drugs to other local drug dealers during 2011 and 2012.
Rodriguez now faces a minimum of 10 years in prison to life and a fine of up to $10 million dollars.
