Former Hidalgo deputy pleads guilty in Panama Unit investigation
HIDALGO COUNTY, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — There's been another guilty plea in the so-called "Panama Unit" scandal for a total of eight guilty pleas.
Former Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputy James Phil Flores pleaded guilty on Thursday morning in U.S. District Court in McAllen to aiding drug traffickers.
Flores has now been convicted of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, but he is free on bond.
Flores and seven other defendants who have pleaded guilty are scheduled for sentencing on September 10th.
