Flood Gates Open
Thousands forced to flee homes as Army Corps of Engineers opens Morganza Spillway.
A torrent of water rushes downstream from the Morganza Spillway toward the sparsely populated Atchafalaya River basin this morning.
The spillway was opened this weekend as part of a plan to divert water away from Baton Route and New Orleans.
The water will impact as many as eight rural parishes and could flood-out more than 10,000 structures and 25,000 people.
While residents in the flood-zone do whatever they can to save their property, prayers were offered Sunday in Vicksburg, Mississippi, a community battling record-setting flooding with the river still rising.
Chris Lynn makes his living on the water fishing.
Even he can't believe what he's seeing.
"The higher the water gets, the more it sinks in, so it's just depressing actually," he said.
It will be at least a week before the Mississippi River crest arrives at the Morganza Spillway.
