Before surgery, 3-year-old Sergio Peña was a very active and playful toddler, even with his medical condition. Doctors diagnosed him with an Atrial Septal Defect when he was only 8 months old. Doctors say ASD is an abnormal hole in the wall that divides the two upper chambers of the heart, which can lead to an early death if not treated.

“There are a lot of parts of the puzzle that have to come together. There’s a lot of planning and work into this before jumping in and do it.”

Sergio went into the operating room yesterday morning, but the waiting game for Veronica and Santiago Peña was stressful. They say they spent those two hours praying their son would come out okay.

“It was a lot for us. He was only 3 years old. He’s our baby.”

But, the operation was a success. The toddler will stay in ICU for a few days.
