The bids to fix the lake in Fireman's Park in McAllen are in, and under budget.

The manmade lake is now drained after it caused groundwater problems in surrounding areas.  Of the four other bids to fix a leak in the lake, a Mercedes-based construction group came in well below the other bids.

The winning bid of $213,000 went to Rovan Texas. The second-lowest bid was more than $150,000 higher than that amount.

"That's one of the things that we're always concerned with, when there's so much disparity between the first and second bid," said McAllen assistant city manager Ray Rodriguez. "However, it's close to the estimate that we had... We make reference calls before we make a recommendation. They've done work up and down the Valley, and they've gotten very good reviews."

City officials expect the project to be finished by the beginning of August.
