MCALLEN — It's a big day for firefighters in McAllen. Today marks the first day of construction on a new drill tower that will allow real time, hands-on fire training.
The near million dollar project will consist of a 3,000 sq. ft. building that will incorporate a 4-story tower and burn props such as a bedroom and kitchen.
They'll also have two clean burn systems that will be propane powered. It's safer and it comes with a kill switch.
"In case anybody gets in trouble inside, you know we have somebody on guard around all the time and they'll be able to turn it off and make sure nobody gets hurt," said Interim Chief, Rafael Balderas.
Construction on the drill tower is expected to be completed by mid December and they'll allow surrounding fire departments across the valley to take advantage.
