A major tire fire broke out at an Edinburg junkyard on Tuesday afternoon.

It took fire crews a few hours to extinguish the blaze off Highway 281 and Monte Cristo road. Authorities blocked off traffic because of the toxic smoke in the air from the burning tires and no injuries were reported. Hidalgo County's Fire Marshall said there was significant damage to some of the machinery inside the recycling site and they continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
