The city of Edinburg has seen a rise in gang activity over the years. The Edinburg Chief of Police tells NewsCenter 23 that the need for a Gang Intelligence Unit was inevitable.
He also tells us he hand selected a very skilled and experienced sergeant to run the team. Her name is Sandra.

Sgt. Sandra Tapia is the newest member of the Edinburg Gang Intelligence Unit.
Out of a tiny little office at the police station, she plans on doing big things.

Sgt. Tapia is used to challenges though. She came to the United States from Mexico at the age of 15 and barely knew English.
Since then, she's come a long way and now... she's on a mission.

Gangs have become a serious problem in Edinburg and identifying new and old members isn't easy.
So far Sgt. Tapia has identified over 13 gangs in the city. Edinburg police is tackling the issue one step at a time.

Right now sgt. tapia is the only person running the gang unit but there are plans for an expansion.
One of the immediate goals is prevent even more teens from joining gangs.
