Congressman Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX-15) has announced that FEMA has granted $6 million dollar to fund several storm/community centers in Pharr.

The grant was awarded in partnership with the City of Pharr and Hidalgo county to build four hurricane or tornado shelters which will also serve as community centers. The shelters, shaped as domes, will be used for residents with special or medical needs in times of severe weather storms.

The structures will be built of concrete at a cost of $1.3 million to $2.4 million for each shelter.

The four locations of the centers, located throughout the city, are 920 S. Fir Street, 400 W. El Dora Street, 1011 W. Kelly Avenue and 1201 W. Rosa Lane.
