Federal Agent in Hospital after Being Caught in the Line of Fire

Wednesday, July 4, 2012 - 6:50am

ICE Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent, Kelton Harrison was shot early this morning while conducting surveillance in an area just outside of Hargill.

"I came in the morning at 7:30 to take care of my dad because my mom had a doctors appointment and then I see all these cop cars everywhere," said neighbor, Elia Ramirez-Castro.

Ramirez-Castro lives nearby where the incident took place and is baffled.

"I'm wondering, still wondering what's going on," said Ramirez-Castro.

The surveillance is a part of an ongoing criminal investigation. DPS, Texas Rangers, Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office and the FBI are lending a hand.

There's actually two crime scenes. Assisting officials says the agent was shot at this house and then followed about five miles down the road by the suspects...to this intersection at TX 186 and FM 493.

Officials continue to comb the brushy area looking for evidence. They are examining tire tracks from the scene and casings along the road. Ramirez-Castro says this is normally a safe neighborhood and is surprised by the sight.

"It's a shock to see cop cars in this area you know near our house because they never, they're never in this area," said Ramirez-Castro.

Agent Harrison was transported to Mcallen Medical hospital where he remains in stable condition.
