FBI Helps Valley Banks Against Bank Robbers
MCALLEN — Bank robbery is an old-time crime often portrayed in the movies. But it's a criminal practice still done today.
The FBI said there were a total of 85 bank robberies in South Texas last year, a big spike from pervious years. And the Valley was no exception.
"Here in the Valley there was two robberies, one in McAllen, one in Harlingen, and we had six in Brownsville last year," said Erik Vasys, FBI Media Consultant.
Many of those have been solved and the FBI is crediting many of those closed robbery cases to a system called Bandit Shield. It's a training system that teaches banks the best practices in the bank security industry.
