Newly approved treatment blasts away fat.

The Cellulaze laser fiber, cleared for use by the FDA last month, is the newest tool to to fight unsightly cellulite.

It goes deeper than other treatments.

"Up until now we’ve had only topicals, radio frequency and they only took care of it superficially and now we’re actually able to treat the underlying cause” said plastic surgeon Dr. Lisa Learn.

The laser is inserted under the skin through tiny incisions.

The area is numbed with local anesthetic.

“It goes inward deep down the skin so what it’s going to do is melt and disrupt the fat cells” said dermatologic surgeon Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera.

The melted fat is squeezed out through the little incisions.

The laser also breaks the fibrous bands that pull the skin down causing the puckering effect.

Finally it’s aimed at the top layer of the skin to get it to produce more collagen, which will cause the skin to tighten.

“With one treatment one time you are treating all three aspects of the things that cause the skin to appear like cottage cheese or orange peel,” said Aguilera.

Aguilera is a speaker and consultant for the company that makes the device, and the average cost of treatment is $5,000 to $6,000.

“Because this is a new technology we have followed patients up to two years only and there’s no cellulite forming again,” said Aguilera.

Some of the before and after photos presented to the FDA to show significant reduction of cellulite with one treatment.

While patients can usually see immediate improvement, it can take several months for the skin tightening effects.
