A man is dead after being shot by a Mercedes police officer over the weekend.

The officer is on paid leave as an outside agency is investigating the incident.  It happened on the 100 block of North Street on Saturday night.  Police were called to the home after the man allegedly threatened his own family.

A statement from the Mercedes Police Department said the shooting victim was "uncooperative and belligerent." It goes on to say that the officers sensed imminent danger before shooting.

"For me, this is a nice neighborhood, we've never had any problems whatsoever. I've never had problems whatsoever with my neighbors. Never, ever," said neighbor Sonia Garza.  "I've been living here in this same place for over 35 years."

The shooting victim was taken to Knapp Medical Center where he later died.  The Mercedes Police Department would not release any more details.
