Family members sentenced to prison for tax fraud scheme

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Three women have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in family run tax fraud scheme.
Judy Lynn McCune, Loretta Ann McCune and Rania Ann Sanchez were sentenced to prison for defrauding the federal government in a scheme to prepare federal tax returns and cashing refund checks of deceased individuals.
U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen sentenced Judy McCune to over four years, Loretta McCune to over one year and Rania Sanchez to two years and in addition ordered to pay restitution of over $200,000 to the IRS.
Judy McCune admitted to recruiting family members into obtaining Social Security numbers and birth dates of deceased individuals, through the Internet, and filing paper and electronic income tax returns.
There were nearly 340 false claims, totaling over $750,000, that were deposited either to a bank account or mailed to an address of the family members.
