WASHINGTON D.C. — Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX28) released the following statement on the impact of the government shutdown on federal workers in the 28th District of Texas:
“Below are newly available statistics on the number of federal employees affected in the 28th District of Texas. There are an estimated 40,000 federal employees in the counties I represent, many of whom have been furloughed, and many more are at risk of furlough. It is estimated that 40% of government employees nationwide have been furloughed.
Because of the inability of a small faction of extreme lawmakers who are holding the federal budget hostage to their partisan demands, the jobs and paychecks of 40% of federal employees, over 800,000 people, are in jeopardy. In Texas, there are more than 130,000 federal workers. These federal employees are not nameless – they all have families who depend upon them, mortgages payments they have to make, children to take care of, and bills to pay. They are the people I am fighting for here in Washington and I will continue to fight for all federal employees until their pay is restored and Congress fulfills its constitutional duty to pass a budget. It is an injustice to every hardworking American to have his or her livelihood taken away.”
