Education Nation Preview

Friday, September 24, 2010 - 9:22am

NBC prepares for week long Education Nation summit.

Next week NBC News will be focusing on education in America.

The week-long series will include an interactive two-day summit on Rockefeller Plaza designed to shine a spotlight on educational issues.

NBC News also plans special coverage and programming that will air across all NBC News platforms for the entire week.

National statistics show American students rank 25th in math and 21st in science when compared to 30 other industrialized countries.

That's just one reason NBC is bringing together national and local educators, government leaders, parents and students for the "Education Nation" summit.

The week of activities includes a two-day summit and nationally broadcast town hall on Sunday moderated by Brian Williams.

"When you think about education, there are some people doing amazing work all across the country," says NBC News President Steve Capus. "We want to showcase that because we think there are some great lessons to be learned."

The "Education Nation" series will kickoff on the Today Show Monday when President Obama sits down with Matt Lauer for a live uninterrupted interview from 8 to 8:30.

The interview will be simulcast on "Today", MSNBC, CNBC and other NBC platforms.
