More than a thousand children can look forward to a Merrier Christmas after getting toys from the Edinburg Police Department Monday.

Children and their parents lined up and down the block in front of the Edinburg Police Department today for the toys.

The needy families had to register with the city of Edinburg to get the gift. Also out: the police department's Blue Santa and Mrs. Claus.

"A lot of the kids are afraid of the police here in the Valley, they're scared of the police," said Balde Gomez of the Edinburg Police Department. "Maybe because of meetings with law enforcement, like citations or tickets, I think that this is a positive way that we at the police department can get the community to support us... And again, we can teach kids to not be afraid of the police, we're not here to do anything bad, we're here to protect and provide for them and if we can maybe even help them."

The Doctor's Hospital at Renaissance and Walgreens helped in making the toys available for the giveaway.
