More than 1,100 Americans age 65 and older die in house fires each year according to the U.S Fire Administration.

To help reduce that number, The Edinburg Fire Department this week, will kick off a new initiative focusing on education and awareness specifically geared toward the elderly.

The Fire Prevention Loteria is a 30-45 minute game that replaces the traditional Bingo/Chalupa game with fire prevention tips. The goal is to highlight safety through a fun activity already popular among many adult centers.

The Fire Prevention Loteria was created by the Fire Marshal’s Office whose staff will conduct the bingos at adult daycare centers in the City. Already three Bingos are scheduled:

Thursday, July 10th 10 a.m.
Mis Abuelitos Adult Daycare
2306 E. Freddy Gonzalez

Monday, July 14th 10 a.m.
Corazones Divinos Adult Daycare
217 Conquest

Friday, July 18th 10 a.m.
Oro Del Pueblo Adult Daycare
2015 E. University Dr.

The Fire Prevention Loterias will be conducted throughout the month of July. Centers interested in scheduling a game for their participants should contact the Edinburg Fire Marshal’s Office at (956) 383-7691.

Edinburg Fire Marshal Omar Garza says not only will the participants have fun, but they will learn tips that can better prepare them to minimize the risk of fires and perhaps even save their lives.
