A 21-year-old Edinburg man is dead after wrapping his car around a utility pole. Baldemar De La Peña died going north on the Frontage Road along Highway 281 this afternoon.

At around 2:30 p.m., he appeared to have lost control of his car. Traffic was cut off to one lane in the area north of Monte Cristo Road as crews cleaned up the accident.

It's been raining steadily all day in the Valley. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It had appeared that the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed, or an excessive rate of speed in this type of weather, which may have been a contributing factor, caused him to lose control and strike the post," said Oscar Treviño of the Edinburg Police Department.

Authorities weren't sure if the victim was wearing his safety belt, or what speed he was going when the accident happened.
