EDCOUCH - The Edcouch Police Department is excited to announce their newest member to their force, Hub the narcotics K-9.
Hub is a three year old Belgian Malinois, and already comes to the Edcouch Police Department with experience searching for narcotics.
"We are very excited because in the history of Edcouch we have never had a K-9," said Eloy Cardenas, Edcouch Police Chief.
"We actually started talking about it a few weeks ago and it started, it came as a blessing to us, it happened quickly, once we got the ball rolling it happened quickly," said Joseph Campos, Edcouch City Manager.
Hub will play a vital role in the Upper Valley because his nose can do what no human can, and that's smell up to a thousand times better than a human nose.
"It's something that will be helping us out with the continuous battle against drugs," said Chief Cardenas.
Hub has already gone through a test drill. Edcouch officers hid a small amount of drugs in a storm drain pipe, and Hub found the stash almost instantly.
Hub and his new officer are just taking the day to strengthen their bond before they hit the streets.
"A few of our officers are already trained with handling a k-9, so hopefully we'll be able, we'll obviously continue more training, but we should be able to move along pretty quickly," said Campos.
Hub won't solely be used for the Edcouch Police Department. They will also offer his services to other police agencies, the school districts, and the Sheriff's Department.
