The city commissioner of Edcouch is now in custody after being on the run for allegedly stealing money from the city.

Noe Garcia, Jr. is being charged with two counts of theft by public servant.  Sources tell Newscenter 23 that Garcia stole thousands of dollars in tax payers' money from funds that were allotted to him during business trips.  These trips occur about four times per year, and Garcia is said to have pocketed hundreds from each trip instead of returning unused funds to the city.

We also learned that Garcia was reportedly staying in hotels and with friends for a month while a warrant was out for him.

He turned himself in to Edcouch police this morning.

"The way the city or anybody gets their money back is by way of restitution after they've been convicted," said Edcouch Police Chief Eloy Cardenas.  "So it's gonna be a pretty lengthy road depending on the dockets from the courthouse, but we'll find out when we get to court."

Garcia was given a $20,000 bond for the two felony charges.  He has served as city commissioner for the past five years/
