Early voting up 17 percent in Cameron County
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — It's the last day of early voting across the state.
Some of the latest early voting numbers in Cameron County show that nearly 9000 people cast their ballots for the primaries.
This is a 17 percent increase from the number of people who voted during the primaries in 2010.
The majority of those who voted were democrats.
Election officials are attributing these figures to mere interest, and hope that the trend continues.
"We think there's heightened interest in a lot of the candidates," said Cameron County elections administrator Christopher Davis. "A lot of the candidates for the countywide positions call Brownsville their home. We think that may explain some of the enhanced support in the southern half of the county that we're seeing."
Your last chance to vote early will be at 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. if you live in Brownsville.
