Drivers Aggravation: Using the right lane to pass a vehicle

Tuesday, November 19, 2013 - 10:24am

We've all been behind a car that we need to get around, but the only lane that's clear, is to the right. So is it safe and legal to pass on the right?

Today's Driver Aggravation topic, is it okay to actually pass on the right side of the highway? Is it legal or illegal?

Amado Olivarez, Driving Instructor, stated, "It can be done with caution. Normally what they recommend, what DPS recommends, is that if you are going to pass anyone, you pass on your left and then move back to your lane. We want to try to keep those left lanes open for vehicles that are passing, but let's face it. it's not a perfect world. A lot of people are not going to obey those laws, but normally they do recommend you pass on your left. If you are going to pass on the right, of course you have to be checking your mirrors like I did mention earlier. Every 15 to 20 seconds, you want to be able to observe everything around you."

DPS Trooper Maria Hernandez commented, "If you want to pass to the right, you may do so, but you need to do it in a safe manner to make sure that you indicate your turn signal and you move when it's safe to do so."
