Driver, with toddler in the front seat, charged with DWI
SAN BENITO, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — Police arrested a man for allegedly driving while intoxicated and having a toddler as a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle.
On Sunday, July 14 at around 10 p.m. a San Benito officer conducted a traffic stop of a blue Dodge mini-van at the intersection of FM 2520 and FM 800 for a defective license plate light.
Once the officer made contact with the driver he noticed a 4 year-old child sitting in the front passenger seat with only a seat belt strapped on.
The officer did a sobriety test on the driver, identified as Rene Garza-Gonzalez, 29, and placed him under arrest after Gonzalez failed the sobriety test.
Gonzalez was charged with DWI with a child passenger and the toddler was released to a relative. He was then handed over to ICE officials, on a detainer, after it was determined he was in the country with no valid documents.
