A man being arrested for disorderly conduct attempts to evade arrest by dragging the arresting officer with his vehicle.

On Saturday, July 26th at around 6 p.m. San Benito police were dispatched to the 1700 block of Russell Lane in reference to a man yelling profanity at a homeowner and his family about their dog being loose.

Officers spoke to the homeowner who wanted to file charges of disorderly conduct on Jerry Daniel Smith, 57. Smith was inside a Dodge van and was advised by the officer he was being arrested for disorderly conduct when Smith turned on the vehicle.

The officer instructed Smith to shut off the vehicle, but  he refused and accelerated at a high rate of speed dragging the officer several feet. Smith was told a second time to stop the vehicle but refused then slowed down enough to park and allow the officer to get off the vehicle.

Smith was charged with disorderly conduct, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, search and transportation and evading arrest with a motor vehicle. His bond was set at $90,000 dollars.
