Dredging Project to Begin on South Padre Island

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 - 8:53am

South Padre Island officials are meeting with U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to discuss the beginning stages of a major dredging project.

The dredging will place more than 200 thousand cubic yards of sand on the northern section of the island. The project will widen the beach and create sand dunes in order to protect private and public property. The city plans to install ramps to allow beach goers to cross safely and increase room for more plants. Officials expect the project to be completed by the end of February.
