HIDALGO COUNTY, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — At a time where there's talk of shutting down Saturday postal service, the Department of Public Safety is now offering Saturday hours.
It's all part of the state's controversial Voter ID law. Specified DPS offices will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. It will only be open to take applications for Election ID Certificates.
The new operating hours will last until November 2. The voter cards are only for people who don't already have valid identification.
"That's why we're making an opportunity this Saturday to be open until November 2, to make sure that everybody gets a chance to get an election identification certificate because it's very important to vote," said Sgt. Johnny Hernandez of the DPS off That's why we make every opportunity for people to come out here and get this ID, so everybody can have their chance at voting."
Applicants will walk out with a paper reciept that they can use to vote with. The permanent card will be sent out shortly after.
