Effective as of June 12th, the City of Brownsville is enacting new parking fees for all downtown parking meters to help stimulate downtown shopping. Additionally, only quarters and dimes will be accepted.

All 1,100 parking meters will cease to accept nickels due to a change in software for the electronic meters, and fees will double for one hour of parking. The new fee structure is as follows:

  • $0.25 for 30 minutes (previously $0.25 for 1 hour)
  • $0.10 for 12 minutes (previously $0.10 for 30 minutes)

There are one-hour, two-hour, four-hour and 8-hour time limit parking meters in the downtown area. City crews will finish transitioning the meters by the end of the week. Meters with the new fees have a yellow sticker.

The City of Brownsville parking meter fee has been well below the national average for years. The increase in meter fees will create a higher parking turnover rate; reduce time spent searching for a parking space; and total time parked in one space.
