Dont Forget Your Helmet

Ohio boy's sledding injury serves as reminder to protect your head during winter fun.

With a giant scar and a mohawk, Isaac Vorhies looks more like a punk rocker than an average boy, but this 6-year-old and his family are happy with the look because it means he's alive.

Isaac was sledding at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio's Indian Mountain Park December 4 when his sled hit a bump and sent him crashing into a basketball pole at the bottom of the hill.

Isaac was knocked unconscious for about four seconds.

While he did wake up with normal awareness, his parents took no chances and rushed him to Akron Childrens Hospital.

Doctors discovered an epidural bleed and did emergency surgery.

"Absolutely he could have died," said Tami Vorhies, Isaac's mother. "I know that God was watching out for my son and there were lots of people praying. That's why he's here."

Since doctors had to shave the right side of Isaac's head, he asked if he could have a mohawk and spike the middle like a rock star.

Tami Vorhies and her husband both work in the medical field and trusted their instincts that Isaac should go directly to the hospital.

The fear that other parents might have taken a wait-and-see approach and taken their kids home.

It's a delay that could prove deadly.
