Donna residents can now see who their city is named after.

City officials unveiled the new statue of Donna Hooks Fletcher on Friday. It sits in Donna Square Park across the street from the Historical Museum.

It was erected on Monday and even city leaders didn't see it until the tarp came off Friday. Since Monday, an officer had been standing guard at the statue day and night.

"It's now for our children to know where our city originated from, how it originated," Donna Mayor David Simmons said. "And now they can put from what they read sort of a face to it and who it's actually named after."

The statue was paid for primarily by the Donna Hooks Fletcher Historical Museum.
