After 30 years of setbacks and negotiations, the City of Donna along with the Mexican government officially opened the Donna Rio Bravo International bridge.

Federal and state officials came out to celebrate the much anticipated event. The bridge cost about $100 million dollars to complete, but is expected to generate over $950 million in development. The bridge  is expected to create over 5,000 jobs and attract millions of tourist.

Government officials crossed the new bridge to celebrate with Mexican President Felipe Calderon. Officials say that the completion of the bridge will boost the economy on both sides of the river and also strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico.

Authorities say that security will be as strict as any other bridge leading into Mexico and among the special guests was U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Alan Bersin. The City of Donna is not known for tourism, but since there is so much land around the bridge, the Mayor of Donna hopes to use that land for businesses that will create even more revenue for the city.
