DONNA - Coming to and from Mexico is rarely ever a quick process. Most of the time long lines of cars build up as Customs and Border Protection check each driver's documents and vehicle.

To try and eliminate the wait, the Donna Rio Bravo International Bridge is excited to announce a ready lane that will reduce the wait time for travelers.

"Seconds that you take off the primary inspection will add to savings on the lines that are already created out there," said Gene Garza, Director of Field Operations.

This new lane saves about 10 seconds of wait time per vehicle. So with just over 800 vehicles coming through per day that's about two hours eliminated.

This lane will be exclusively for Radio Frequency Identification Documents, or RFID Travel Documents.

"The ready lane works by travelers holding their travel documents towards a R-F-I-D reader which will transmit a unique code to C-B-P system," said Nancy Becker, Donna Port Director.

RFID Documents can be a U.S. Passport, Enhanced Driver Card or License, a Trusted Traveler Card or an Enhanced Permanent Resident Card. Donna will be the only crossing with a Ready Lane in the Rio Grande Valley.

"We are cognizant of the traffic that we have down here in the Rio Grande Valley, ya know you look at the area from Roma all the way to Brownsville and it's a big amount of people that cross daily and use these crossings," said Garza.

The Ready Lane will be open to the public starting March 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Signs directing traffic and giving instructions will be posted for drivers waiting to cross over.
