The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Thursday it will sue Texas over the state's controversial voter ID law.

It requires voters to show identification at voting booths.

The Justice Department claims the law violates the 1965 voting rights act and the constitution's 14th and 15th amendments.

Texas passed the law in 2011, but implemented it after the Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in June that prevented states from changing election laws without federal approval.

In a separate case, the Justice Department will file a motion to intervene in a lawsuit challenging the state's redistricting.
