Albuquerque residents witness strange encounter with a 300-pound bear.

Two Albuquerque residents woke up to find a 300-pound black bear in one of their trees this morning. That's when they realized their dogs were the ones who chased the scared bear up the tree in the first place.

Meet Balto and Sasha. These two Siberian huskies were able to scare a 300-pound bear up a tree this morning.

Larry Wells says "I came outside and I saw one big paw hanging off about 20 feet up in a tree.

A tree that sits behind Larry Wells and his wife, Patricia Dickinson's home on the aptly-named 'black bear road' and this isn't the first time Balto and Sasha have taken on a bear.

Larry says "so he's got two bears, two bear notches on his collar. He's quite a dog."

But the couple says it's by far the biggest one they've ever seen. When Fish and Game came out to tranquilize the bear, it took three darts to sedate him.

Patricia Dickinson says "as one of the guys said, 'He's still perky.'"

Betsy Dodson lives next door. She saw the whole thing from her front porch.

Betsy says "they had to use three different darts. And then they had the bear propped over on the top of the tree, and so they had to get up there and shake the tree.

Patricia says "two of the guys got up into the tree and actually put a rope around the chest of the bear, and then they gently lowered it onto an air mattress."

Larry says "he stretched out. As he was lowered down, of course, he stretched out. I would say he's at least six feet, and he was very bulky."

Fish and Game then took the bear to a spot west of Albuquerque and let him go.
