Derailment Forces Evacuations
Families allowed back into their homes after leaking substance identified.
More than 100 people were evacuated on Sunday after a freight train derailed on a stretch of Union Pacific Railroad while traveling through Colfax, California.
The evacuation was lifted around 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
The incident was considered a "hazmat " situation because a clear liquid was leaking from one of the cars, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Brand said.
It was later determined that the substance was not hazardous, and that it was a liquid used to preserve animal hide.
Officials said a conductor and two other workers were on the train when the incident took place, but no one was hurt.
