Many people have questioned why it's taking the city of Brownsville so long to demolish the abandoned buildings the area.

The buildings take so long to demolish because there is a thirty day wait period before the Brownsville building and standards commission can put together paperwork to get rid of these buildings.

Because of this, there are many abandoned houses in the area. People have expressed concern that these abandoned buildings are not just an eyesore, but they're also a health risk for the people of Brownsville.

Evaristo Gamez Jr., Brownsville Permitting Director, stated: "Even though they're abandoned, they have high grass, for instance, and that harbors mosquitos. It harbors any other animals. I mean, also there's people that throw trash there and that's a health issue for the adjacent neighbors."

The average time it takes a building to actually be demolished is about one hundred and twenty days.
