Sheriff's deputy shoots unarmed elderly veteran when the man reached for a walking cane during a traffic stop. Amy Cowman reports.

(WCNC) A 70-year-old man reaching for his cane was shot by a deputy in York County, South Carolina Tuesday evening according to the sheriff's office.

It happened during a traffic stop on Highway 321 in Clover.

During a Tuesday press conference, the sheriff's office said Deputy Terence Knox pulled over Canipe for an expired license plate on his white pickup truck. Police say Canipe got out of his vehicle, despite Deputy Knox telling him not to. Canipe then reached for his cane.

Deputy Knox feared he was reaching for a weapon, according to investigators.
