HIDALGO COUNTY (NEWS CENTER 23) — The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is trying to idetify a body found just north of the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.
It was discovered on some farmland just off Military Highway early Tuesday morning. It was a Hispanic male, laying face down in the dirt and mud.
"Preliminary assessment is that this is going to be the number 11 homicide for the year," said Sheriff Lupe Trevino. "There's evidence on the body that shows that the body died of a homicide."
The sheriff hasn't determined if the body was killed at the field or dumped there. The last time the property owner went through the area was Sunday night. Investigators say the body has been there likely for more than a day.
"I just find it strange that either Parks and Wildlife or Border Patrol did not see it and probably they didn't go in there because of the extra muddy conditions," Trevino said.
Investigators had to wrap up the crime scene early because storm clouds were quickly rolling into the area again. The body was found less than mile from the border. The sheriff isn't giving any more clues at this time.
"Even though it is remote out in Hidalgo County and rural, it is very heavily patrolled by the Border Patrol," Trevino said. "As you can see there is a Border Patrol unit on the levee right now."
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Anybody with information is encouraged to call the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office.
