Cyber Sales Success

Holiday shoppers spent 30% more this Cyber Monday than in 2011.

If elbows are the tools of the trade on black friday keyboards and touch screens were the ones of choice on Cyber Monday.

IBM's research shows a 30 percent spike compared to Cyber Monday a year ago, the single biggest online spending day ever.

That's on the heels of a 14 percent jump in consumer spending over the weekend.

Analysts also note that shopping habits are changing.

Almost one in five Cyber Monday consumers used a smart phone or tablet to shop, and sales made from those devices nearly doubled from a year ago, accounting for 13 percent of all online sales.

Often, those cyber shoppers are purchasing items they've already checked out at physical retailers.

It's a phenomenon known as "showrooming" that threatens brick and mortar stores.

"Retailers are going to have to start thinking about other ways to entertain their customers and get them into their stores," says Walter Deacon of Boston Retail Partners.

But short term, retailers both online and on the ground are hoping the lure of bargains will keep the early holiday sales momentum going.

The final score won't be known until after Christmas.
