There may be a new cure brewing in the Valley for the citrus greening disease that is deadly to those trees.

A plant pathologist at the Texas Agrilife Research Center in Weslaco is using spinach genes to cross with citrus trees. The result he says are trees that are resistant to the deadly citrus greening disease. The research has been ongoing for over three years and researchers say the trees have been monitored in greenhouse trials. Now, they're ready to be planted in the same fields as regular fruiting trees. The research is still early, but has sparked the interest of the Food and Drug Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
