Two men were arrested after leading Weslaco police on a high speed chasing ending when the driver slammed the vehicle into a police unit.

On Thursday, July 11 in the early morning hours, a patrol officer noticed a man running from a Stripes store, located on 8th Street and Bridge, and jumping into white four-door Mercury with a package.

The officer initiated a traffic stop and then observed the passenger and driver trading places and then driving off at a high rate of speed.

During the second pursuit, the driver drove the vehicle on the wrong side of the street, speeding through subdivision streets, running traffics signs and then losing control and taking down several mailboxes. He then spun into a driveway reversing the vehicle and ramming into the patrol unit.

The driver fled on foot and the officer was able to catch the suspect, who resisted being arrested, as the passenger waited inside the car. Police identified the two suspects as Alfredo Cornejo, Jr., 36, and Javier R. Ojeda, 36.

Cornejo was charged with theft, resisting arrest, evading by vehicle and evading by foot with a bail set at $55,000.

Ojeda was charged with theft, public intoxication and had a city warrant with fines totaling over $700.
